Outrage over ‘mountain’ of cigarette butts at iconic Tenerife viewpoint

Concerning images of discarded cigarette butts at one of Tenerife's beloved viewpoints have sparked widespread outrage. The Mirador de Chipeque, renowned for its breathtaking views of Mount Teide and stunning sunsets, has become the site of a major litter problem highlighted by a video posted on social media issue, showing a ‘mountain’ of discarded cigarette butts collected from the area.

The video, shared on Thursday (August 1st) shows the alarming amount of cigarette butts scattered across the ground at the Mirador de Chipeque. The user who filmed the video meticulously gathered the butts into a plastic tray before properly disposing of them in a bin.

This act of environmental awareness contrasts sharply with the behaviour of some visitors who have shown blatant disregard for the natural beauty of the site by throwing the butts on the floor, at a time when smoking is not allowed in these areas due to the risk of forest fire.

With high temperatures and fire alerts common during this time of year, the presence of discarded cigarettes increases the potential for wildfire incidents.

In response to the growing problem, the Tenerife Cabildo has introduced a smoking ban in natural spaces. This new regulation, introduced for the first time, aims to protect areas including trails, viewpoints, forest roads, recreational areas, and campsites from the hazards of smoking-related litter and fire.

The measure aims to encourage the highest level of public cooperation in preserving these cherished natural environments, but doesn’t seem to be working as many smokers obviously don’t care if these images are anything to go by.

The Mirador de Chipeque:

The Mirador de Chipeque offers spectacular views across the northern part of Tenerife, stretching from Punta del Hidalgo in the west to Buenavista del Norte in the east. Its vantage point provides unparalleled views of the Orotava Valley and the imposing presence of Mount Teide. The sight of the sun setting over the ocean, often obscured by a sea of clouds, creates a unique and unforgettable experience.

These images highlight the need for greater public awareness and responsibility in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of Tenerife's natural treasures. The local government’s new smoking restrictions are a step toward protecting these iconic landscapes from further degradation and ensuring they remain a source of pride and enjoyment for both residents and visitors.
