Motorhome Association hits back at claims of conflict in Amarilla Golf

The Asociación de Caravanas y Autocaravanas de Tenerife (ACAT Tenerife) has issued a firm response to a statement released by individuals claiming to be residents of Amarilla Golf. The original communiqué denounced the existence of what it described as an unserviced motorhome parking area that allegedly causes excess noise, hygiene problems, and friction with the surrounding residential and tourist areas.

ACAT Tenerife rejects the accusations outright, insisting that there is no widespread neighbour opposition, and claiming instead that the complaints come from a single resident, undermining the narrative of a community-wide dispute.

“Completely false”

“It is completely false that there is a general neighbourhood movement against the Provisional Upper Motorhome Area in Amarilla Golf,” the association states. It argues that numerous residents have publicly expressed support for the site, describing it as well-organised, respectful, and free of coexistence issues.

ACAT questions the legitimacy of the initial statement, asserting that “the supposed complaints come from one person, who does not represent any neighbourhood group nor the majority view of residents and local businesses”.

Facilities and hygiene

The residents’ communiqué claimed the municipal plot lacked drinking water, sanitation and basic hygiene conditions, despite hosting dozens of motorhomes.

In response, ACAT Tenerife stresses that the site does have full sanitation infrastructure, including an eco-point, potable water supply and grey and black-water disposal areas. As motorhomes are self-contained vehicles with their own power systems, the association argues there is no structural hygiene issue linked to their presence.

Noise and coexistence

Allegations of noise, music, outdoor activity and inappropriate use of public space are also dismissed by the association. It notes that no official noise complaints have been filed and that the site’s rules prohibit any form of outdoor noise after 11pm. Motorhomes, they add, remain stationary throughout their stay. Occasional noise in the area, ACAT suggests, comes from nearby construction works, not from visitors.

Planning and land-use debate

Another key claim centred on the land’s urban classification as community facilities, which critics argued cannot be used as a motorhome area without a specific technical plan.

ACAT acknowledges the classification but maintains it permits temporary, general-interest uses, and denies that the current activity is illegal. The group says temporary recreational uses do not require a specific urban planning project and highlights that the area has both a Safety and Emergency Plan and civil liability insurance.

Complaints to the council

While the alleged residents claimed to have filed multiple complaints with Ayuntamiento de San Miguel de Abona since 2022, ACAT refutes this, stating it is aware only of correspondence from a single individual. The association argues there is no evidence of collective neighbourhood complaints, nor records of coexistence problems.

Economic impact

ACAT also underscores the positive economic impact of the temporary motorhome area. Over 123 days, they estimate more than €130,000 has been spent locally by users of the site, benefiting shops, bars, restaurants and service stations.

The council backs ACAT’s version

The San Miguel de Abona council has confirmed to Atlántico Hoy that it has not received a single formal complaint regarding the presence of motorhomes at the site, which officials emphasise is being used temporarily while the land awaits its future role as a social-care centre run by the island and regional governments.

The council also states that local businesses support the motorhome presence due to the economic activity it generates. It reiterates that users are required to respect the environment and avoid any ecological impact, conditions that, according to the council, are being met.
