Maximum tension for the first Canarian derby of the season

With the World cup in full flow, many football fans may not realise that there is a certain derby match being played on Saturday 26th, the Canarian Derby between UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife in the Spanish 2nd division.

The match is a 33,000 sell out and tensions are high with the clash being declared as "high risk" by the authorities. Recent form is in favour of Tenerife, they have won their last two league games and a cup victory to boot.

Meanwhile Las Palmas, after leading the league a few weeks ago, have stuttered recently and currently sit in a respectable third place. This year’s derby has an extra edge due to comments made by the Las Palmas President coupled with a measly ticket allocation given to the visiting Tenerife fans, with only 690 available.

This "feud" goes back to the Covid times when tickets were not given to Las Palmas fans for a league game last January, and It has been tit-for-tat between the two clubs ever since.

However, it was hoped that a new season would mean it was water under the bridge with a resolution that suits both sets of supporters, and the normal allocation of 1,500-1,700 tickets being respected.

On the pitch, slowly but surely, CD Tenerife are seeing injured players return after starting the season with ten missing, and with this, form has improved, in fact, the squad will be at full strength very soon when English player Sam Shashoua returns to full fitness.

Another young English player at CDT is Arvin Appiah, the wonderkid who was signed by Almeria for 10 million euros from Nottingham Forest in 2019.

All in all there’s everything to play for at a passionate sell-out Canarian Derby tomorrow night. The action starts at 9pm at the Estadio Gran Canaria and should be on at a bar near you.
