The Guardia Civil in Lanzarote arrested a man on 29th August on suspicion of drug trafficking after he was found carrying several types of illegal substances during the annual fiestas in Caleta de Famara.

The operation formed part of a wider security plan to increase police presence at large gatherings across the island, aimed at preventing crime and ensuring the safety of residents and visitors.

Officers from the Costa Teguise Citizen Security Patrol were on foot patrol through the town's busy streets when they noticed a man behaving suspiciously. As soon as he spotted the officers, he became visibly nervous and attempted to avoid them. His behaviour raised further suspicion, prompting the agents to stop and identify him.

A search of the suspect revealed 20 small packets believed to contain cocaine, along with several portions of hashish, a sealed bag of hallucinogenic mushrooms, and a number of blue pills.

The man was immediately detained, and both he and the seized substances were handed over to the court.

Every year, police carry out targeted operations at these popular gatherings, where large crowds and party atmospheres make them attractive to drug traffickers and small-scale dealers.

Those caught are usually detained on suspicion of drug trafficking and brought before the local courts, where penalties can range from heavy fines to significant prison sentences, depending on the amount and type of substances involved.
