Hotel offers 500 euro bonus to employees if they find a new member of staff

The recently opened Barceló Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's largest hotel, have made it public knowledge that they, like many other businesses in the Canary Islands, are facing a critical shortage of staff. To try and combat this, the hotel has launched a desperate promotional campaign to attract new employees.

The hotel chain has introduced a unique initiative, offering a €500 bonus to any employee who successfully recruits a new member of staff whether it be a family member, friend, or acquaintance to join the hotel's workforce.

Maysa Ághattas, Deputy Director of Barceló Playa Blanca, stated that the campaign has generated a considerable buzz across various departments at the hotel. "Employees realise it's a good opportunity, and they know people who are interested and looking for work," she said.

The unusual move highlights the staffing problems faced by the hospitality industry on the island, possibly due to factors such as increased demand, labour shortages, housing, travel, and for the bars looking for British staff, visa requirements post-Brexit.

This offer of a financial incentive to existing staff reflects the hotel's urgent need to fill positions promptly to maintain its service standards and meet guest expectations. As the campaign gains attention, it remains to be seen whether it will prove successful in addressing the staffing shortfall at the Barceló Playa Blanca.
