The Canary Islands Government has declared a pre-alert for forest fire risk across five islands, as the region braces for an “unusual heatwave for this time of year”, in the middle of November.
Meteorologists warn that temperatures could reach or even exceed 34°C in some mid-altitude areas over the next few days, while relative humidity is expected to remain low and southerly winds may bring a light haze of calima.
The alert, announced by the Directorate General of Emergencies, applies to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro.
The decision follows information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other official sources, as part of the Canary Islands’ Special Civil Protection and Emergency Plan for Forest Fires (INFOCA).
In La Palma, thermometers already topped 30°C early yesterday morning, Monday, signalling the start of an unusually warm spell for the autumn season.
Authorities are advising residents and tourists to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor fires, and exercise caution in forested areas while the pre-alert remains in effect.
