Guardia Civil seize 1,600 kilos of drugs in an inflatable boat on a beach in the Canary Islands

The Guardia Civil have seized an inflatable boat carrying over 1,610 kilos of hashish packed in 46 bales on the beach of Los Mozos in the municipality of Betancuria in Fuerteventura.

On May 10th, the Guardia Civil, in coordination with the Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance of Morocco (DGST), received information about a possible drug smuggling operation into the Canary Islands.

At around 3am that morning, a patrol boat of the Provincial Maritime Service of Las Palmas detected a suspicious vessel west of Fuerteventura, near Aguas Verdes (Betancuria).

As a result, a police operation was activated, involving Judicial Police officers and Citizen Security patrols, targeting a potential drug drop on one of the beaches along the coast in that area.

On spotting the boat, the Guardia Civil patrol boat approached it and saw two crew members onboard with numerous packages. Realising the presence of the patrol boat, they attempted to flee towards Los Mozos beach, where a series of flash light signals could be seen, possibly from people there to meet them.

Following the pursuit by the Maritime Service patrol boat, the inflatable managed to reach the beach but the two crew were forced to abandon it and ran over to a 4x4 vehicle where three people were waiting for them, and drove off.

Reaching the beach, the agents took charge of the abandoned boat, which was loaded with empty fuel barrels, two engines, and 46 bales containing over 1,610 kilos of hashish. The Guardia Civil have confirmed that the investigation remains open, and future arrests are not ruled out.
