Gran Canaria is considering introducing an entrance fee for access to Roque Nublo

The President of the Gran Canaria Cabildo, Antonio Morales, announced on Friday that depending on the conclusions drawn from the study on visitor capacity control and access to the natural monument area of Roque Nublo, a decision will be made regarding the potential introduction of an entrance fee for visitors.

Furthermore, Morales has also said that the study will be completed within two months to ensure the protection of the site.

Speaking to journalists, Morales recalled that for the past two years, the Cabildo has been working on protecting the island's natural spaces, focusing on three areas for their uniqueness: the Maspalomas Sand Dunes, Roque Nublo, and the Bandama Caldera.

He emphasised that a campaign has just been launched for the preservation of the Maspalomas Dunes, with eight agents assigned to patrol and protect the area, and further actions are being planned for its preservation.

Measures have also been taken in the Bandama Caldera, including the prohibition of buses above a certain size and weight to circulate, as they were affecting both the landscape and access roads.

Regarding the study on Roque Nublo, Morales said that nothing is finalised yet, but the objective is to control the area and limit entry, pending the results of the study. However, he confirmed that the Cabildo is clear on the necessity to limit access to these spaces for the public to preserve them.
