The Guardia Civil have arrested four people suspected of involvement in two violent robberies targeting foreign tourists in Puerto Rico, in the south of Gran Canaria.
The incidents, which occurred on New Year’s Eve and 8th January, highlight the importance of vigilance and swift action by security forces in tourist areas.
The first incident took place on the night of 31st December, when plainclothes officers came across a middle-aged man lying on a public road, showing clear signs of assault. The victim reported being suddenly attacked by three young men, who stole valuable possessions before fleeing.
Using the victim's detailed descriptions, officers quickly circulated the information, leading another patrol to apprehend the suspects near a landscaped area close to Puerto Rico’s nightlife area.
The three young men—two aged 20 with prior criminal records and one aged 19—were found in possession of the stolen items, including a mobile phone and smartwatch described by the victim.
In the second incident, on 8th January, a Norwegian tourist reported being attacked in the Puerto Rico Gardens while returning to his apartment after a night out. The assailant, who initially attempted to befriend the victim near a row of bars, followed him to a quieter area, where he attacked him from behind, throwing him to the ground and stealing €950 in cash.
Security footage from the area proved crucial in identifying the perpetrator. The recordings showed the suspect approaching the victim near the nightlife venue, attempting to gain his trust under the guise of leading him elsewhere. The interaction briefly raised suspicions, prompting a staff member from the venue to intervene. However, when the victim proceeded toward his apartment, the attacker discreetly followed.
As the tourist entered the garden area, the suspect accelerated his pace, ambushing him in a secluded spot to commit the assault and theft before fleeing the scene.
The video evidence provided a clear identification of the assailant, a 29-year-old man with an extensive criminal record. He was arrested two days after the attack.
The Guardia Civil has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors in the region. Authorities urge the public to remain cautious, particularly during nighttime and in less populated areas.
The arrested individuals, along with the police reports, have been handed over to the Maspalomas Magistrates’ Court for sentencing.
