FIFA officially confirm Gran Canaria as a 2030 World Cup host venue

Gran Canaria has officially been confrimed as one of the host venues for the FIFA World Cup 2030, marking a historic moment for the islands. The announcement comes as part of the collaborative hosting by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, the first World Cup to span three countries simultaneously.

The island’s Estadio de Gran Canaria in Las Palmas will host several group-stage matches, drawing football fans from across the globe. This milestone elevates Gran Canaria's profile on the international stage and brings significant economic and tourism opportunities.

“It is a great honour that Gran Canaria has been chosen to host the most important sporting event in the world,” stated officials from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. The stadium is set to undergo extensive renovations to meet FIFA’s stringent requirements, including increasing its seating capacity from 32,000 to 44,500, surpassing the minimum threshold of 40,000 for hosting quarterfinal matches.

In addition to upgraded seating, the renovation plan includes improving hospitality facilities and an extended roof structure. These enhancements aim to align with FIFA’s technical standards while providing a world-class experience for players and fans.

The Cabildo has also confirmed that the pitch will feature a hybrid reinforcement system and advanced vacuum and ventilation mechanisms to maintain optimal playing conditions. The stadium’s current grass pitch meets size requirements, and operational adjustments are expected to resolve minor spatial limitations around the field.

While construction has yet to begin, the process for contractor selection is underway, with assurances of funding provided during FIFA’s visit in September to assess the stadium. Renovation plans also include upgrading technical facilities, such as independent power lines, a modern lighting system, and the installation of additional giant screens.

FIFA has praised the Cabildo’s efforts to incorporate sustainability into its operations and construction. Beyond the World Cup, these enhancements will benefit the stadium’s legacy, supporting events ranging from local football matches to concerts.
