The Granadilla de Abona Town Hall have announced the temporary closure of El Médano's central beach today (Tuesday) after water tests detected a level of faecal bacteria (enterococci) exceeding the legal limit. As a result, a red flag is now being displayed signalling a temporary ban on swimming.
While previous water quality tests in recent weeks indicated good conditions, the latest results show a slight exceedance of the permitted bacteria levels. The council reassured the public that the detected levels surpassed the threshold only minimally.
To ensure the safety of beachgoers, the town hall has initiated a re-analysis process in coordination with a specialised laboratory. The beach will remain closed until these new tests confirm that the water is safe for swimming, at which point the beach will be reopened.
In the meantime, they urge visitors to adhere to the guidelines provided by the beach safety and rescue teams.
