Airports across the Canary Islands are expected to operate 4,184 flights this weekend, between Friday and Sunday, a 4.7% increase on the same weekend last year, when 3,996 were recorded, according to figures released by AENA.

Across Spain as a whole, 16,428 flights are scheduled over the same three-day period, representing a year-on-year rise of 3.2%.

The airports with the highest number of operations this weekend will be Madrid, Barcelona, and Málaga. Madrid leads with 3,292 flights, followed by Barcelona with 2,753 and Málaga with 1,285. Gran Canaria Airport and Palma de Mallorca complete the list, with 1,255 and 1,034 scheduled flights respectively.

The second day of industrial action by South Europe Ground Services, IAG’s handling company, is taking place today at Madrid. Minimum service levels have been set at 77% for flights between the islands and mainland Spain, effectively ensuring that most affected flights are protected. For flights exceeding 500 kilometres, the minimum service requirement is 56%.

According to the USO union, the high minimum service levels mean a large proportion of staff are obliged to work, substantially limiting the ability to exercise the right to strike. Participation among those without assigned minimum services has been noted, though numbers have yet to be confirmed.

Figures for whole Christmas period

Over the broader Christmas period, from 19th December to 7th January 2026, Spanish airports are expected to manage 101,793 flights, an increase of 7.8% compared with 2024.

On key holiday dates, 4,420 operations are scheduled for New Year’s Eve (57 fewer than last year), while New Year’s Day and Epiphany will see 4,901 flights (+452) and 4,595 flights (-24) respectively.
