Calima, strong winds, and bad sea conditions hit the south of Tenerife

Weather warnings activated in the south of Tenerife following advice from AEMET are proving their worth as the region has been hit by a thick calima (haze due to dust particles suspended in the air) and strong winds which are also causing adverse sea conditions.

Although general temperatures have dropped across the island to around 26°C, locally in the south they are reaching 30°C due to hot winds, with gusts forecast of between 60 and 90 km/h, although no flights have been affected at the south airport yet due to visibility or winds.

Health advice:

The General Directorate for Security have issued advice during this episode of calima, which include keeping doors and windows shut, and avoiding physical exercise outdoors due to the bad air quality. It is also advisable for those with any respiratory illness, such as asthma, to wear a face mask when going outside.

Activities cancelled and sea warnings:

Due to the strong winds the sea conditions have worsened, the swells have deepened, currents are stronger, and waves are bigger. This has led to many water-based activities being cancelled including diving, fishing, boat trips, and water sports, plus there are warnings for the dangers of bathing in non-protected areas and off rocks on the coast.

Also, activities such as paragliding have been cancelled due to the strong winds being experienced, particularly in mountainous areas.
