A boat moored in the La Marina area of the sports harbour in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, went up in flames yesterday morning, Saturday, triggering a major response from emergency services. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is expected to follow.

According to the Port Police, the incident occurred shortly after the marina opened for morning activity, with smoke seen rising from the vessel. Staff working nearby alerted emergency services immediately, prompting firefighters and marina personnel to move quickly to secure the area.

Because of the risk of the fire spreading to nearby boats, the vessel was towed to a safe location away from other moorings. This manoeuvre, coordinated between marina staff and firefighters, was essential to prevent further damage within one of the island’s busiest leisure ports.

Once the boat was isolated, firefighters tackled the flames using special foam designed for marine fires, which helps smother fuel-based blazes more effectively than water. Thanks to the swift intervention, the fire was extinguished before it could escalate or cause injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing a large plume of smoke rising above the marina, drawing the attention of passers-by and nearby businesses. Local authorities have confirmed that no one was on board at the time, and there were no reported casualties.

The boat has been left under the supervision of the port authorities while an investigation is carried out to determine what caused the fire. Although accidental causes have not been ruled out, officials say it is too early to confirm any hypothesis.
