The beach at El Puertito in Costa Adeje, in south of Tenerife, has been temporarily closed to bathing following the detection of elevated levels of faecal bacteria in water quality tests.
The Adeje Town Council announced the closure earlier today, Thursday, on its social media channels, stating that it had activated the official protocol for information, monitoring and closure, and confirmed that the beach will remain closed until follow-up testing confirms that the water is once again safe for public use.
Second Closure in the Canary Islands This Week
This is the second beach closure in the Canary Islands this week due to water contamination. In Lanzarote, Playa Dorada in Playa Blanca was closed from Tuesday after microbiological contamination was detected in samples analysed by public health laboratories.
That beach was reopened this morning after fresh testing confirmed the water had returned to acceptable quality standards. During the closure, Yaiza Town Council advised beachgoers to visit alternative bathing areas such as Papagayo beach, Playa Flamingo, or the small beach in Playa Blanca.
Authorities in all islands continue to monitor coastal water quality closely, especially as summer tourist numbers increase, and have urged residents and visitors to follow local updates for safe beach use.
