AEMET issue alert for a Calima in the Canary Islands this Friday

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning for the arrival of a Saharan dust cloud, known locally as a calima, in the Canary Islands starting this Friday, 30th May.

It is expected to affect visibility and air quality, particularly in the eastern islands and Tenerife.

Today, Thursday, the weather across the archipelago will remain generally calm. Skies will be mostly clear or with some light clouds in the northern lowlands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as well as in the western parts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

Minimum temperatures are forecast to remain stable, while maximum temperatures will rise slightly in northern and eastern regions. Winds will be light to moderate from the north, shifting to a north-westerly direction in the eastern islands.

However, Friday will bring a notable change. While cloud patterns will remain similar to today, a haze is expected to reach the islands from North Africa. AEMET warns that the calima will affect Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife, leaving a thin layer of dust on windows and surfaces, especially noticeable at dawn and dusk.

Temperatures are expected to rise slightly to moderately, particularly in mid-altitude areas and highlands. Northerly winds will continue across the archipelago.

Residents and visitors are advised to take precautions, especially those with respiratory conditions, as the fine dust particles can impact air quality.
