A 61-year-old hiker dies after falling 15 metres down a ravine

A 61-year-old man died this morning (Sunday) after falling down a ravine in the municipality of Valleseco in Gran Canaria, according to a report from the emergency services.

The incident took place at around 7:20am on the Zumacal highway (GC-307), at kilometre 2, from where a member of the public called 112 to report that they had found some hiking poles and a backpack on the edge of a wall and heard someone shouting for help from the ravine below.

Upon arrival, they soon realised that it was an area too difficult for medical personnel to access and that the person affected had fallen approximately 15 metres, so firemen began the descent to rescue him.

When they reached the man, they found that he was unconscious and in cardiorespiratory arrest, so administered CPR but unfortunately couldn’t revive him and he died at the scene.

After taking his body up to the road, medical personnel certified his death and his body has been taken for autopsy to officially identify him and confirm the cause of death.
