29 dogs were found living in shocking conditions on a property in La Aldea de San Nicolás, Gran Canaria, raising concerns over animal welfare standards in the Canary Islands.

Officers from the Guardia Civil launched an investigation following a tip-off from a member of the public. On inspection, they discovered multiple dogs showing signs of neglect; many of them were injured and receiving no veterinary care.

The site had no perimeter fencing, leaving the animals exposed and at further risk. Makeshift kennels built from pallets, scrap wood, and old furniture offered little protection from wind, rain, or strong sunlight and contained sharp hazards such as nails and splintered wood.

All of the dogs were chained with very short leads, severely restricting their movement. The ground was covered in accumulated waste, forcing the animals to live among their own excrement and attracting large numbers of insects.

Food and water containers were found to be heavily contaminated with dirt and decomposing matter, making them unsafe. Investigators also noted visible wounds on every animal, some with flies present, and signs of prolonged neglect, including one dog seen eating its own faeces.

As a precaution, all 29 dogs, including six puppies, were seized and transferred to municipal facilities with the support of the local council’s animal welfare department. The animals are now safe and under care while the case remains with judicial authorities.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated on suspicion of animal cruelty through neglect.
