The Spanish Government will be able to tax single-use plastics from today

The Spanish Government will approve its Waste and Contaminated Soils bill today (Tuesday), which introduces the ability to impose tax on non-reusable plastic containers and on incineration and the deposit of waste in landfill. The new regulation, which will replace the current law of 2011, aims to reduce the impact of certain plastic products on human health and the environment, with special attention to regulating the decontamination of soils.

In accordance with the polluter pays principle, the text will establish new taxes, one of them on non-reusable plastic containers, at a rate of 45 cents per kilogram, and another on landfill and incineration, which may range from 1.5 euros to 40 euros for each metric ton. Likewise, it includes proposals for the reduction of food waste by at least 20% by 2030 compared to 2020, by encouraging food donations and looking at other ways of food redistribution.

It also aims to reduce the amount of waste that people generated in their homes in 2010 by 15%, with a reduction in half of food waste in homes by 2030, and to increase municipal waste rates by 5% every 5 years from 2020, until reaching 65% in 2035.

The law will also address other issues such as the prohibition of the destruction of non-perishable surpluses, the promotion of drinking water consumption, bars and restaurants will be obliged to always offer tap water (where drinkable), premature obsolescence and the separate collection of bio-waste in 2022 for local entities with more than 5,000 inhabitants and in 2024 for the rest.
