La Palma registers a 4.9 earthquake that shakes the island

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has registered an earthquake of 4.9 magnitude in Villa de Mazo, registered at a depth of 38 kilometres this afternoon (Saturday), which has been felt by the population and described on social media as being “very, very strong” by people who experienced it.

The earthquake occurred at 4:34pm and is the largest one since the seismic swarm that started before, and has continued during, the eruption in La Palma began.

Since the early of hours of this morning, an earthquake of 4.3 magnitude was recorded, and in total the IGN has reported 30 today, of which a dozen have exceeded magnitude 3.

The scientific committee of the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergencies Plan (Pevolca) has been warning for several days of the possibility of earthquakes of intensity VI, which are considered to be "slightly harmful", as they can cause small objects to fall, furniture can move and sometimes plates and glasses can break, as well as damage of various degrees to buildings.

Up to now, the strongest intensity has been V on the scale, and none have yet reached VI on La Palma.
