The Ministry of Health updated and consolidated the data for coronavirus in the Canary Islands yesterday, notifying of 292 new cases which takes the total number of accumulated cases to 28,571 for the islands and 7,157 active, the highest number since the pandemic began.
They also confirmed that three people have died from Covid related deaths: a 59-year-old man in Gran Canaria, a 92-year-old woman in Tenerife and an 89-year-old man in Tenerife. All of them were in hospital and some previous pathology.
By islands, Tenerife has now reached a new high of 14,041 accumulated cases since the pandemic began and a new high of active cases with over 5,200. Gran Canaria sees an increase in the number of positives again with numbers in the 80’s not the 40’s, Lanzarote continues to have a rebound with 52 new cases and actives have quadrupled over Christmas, and even Fuerteventura have seen an increase this week.
The Accumulated Incidence rate (AI) at 7 days in the Canary Islands currently stands at 67.85 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is a slight reduction over the last week, and the AI at 14 days is 131.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, also an small decrease, but hasn’t yet had the ‘Christmas effect’ of cases.
To date, a total of 698,034 PCR tests have been carried out in the Islands, of which 6,082 correspond to the last 48 hours, with a positivity rate over 10%. The positivity rate is one of the criteria in the ECDC colour rating of risk, and needs to be below 5% to avoid being a ‘red’ risk area.
