Rain, haze and rough seas are set to affect the Canary Islands over the weekend, prompting the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) to issue yellow warnings for four islands and the regional government to activate two island-wide pre-alerts.

According to AEMET, rainfall will continue across the archipelago at least until Saturday afternoon, with La Palma the only island under a yellow alert for heavy rain.

However, haze (calima) will be the main concern from Sunday onwards, placing Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura under yellow alerts for reduced visibility and high dust concentrations.

Alongside AEMET’s warnings, the Canary Islands Government has activated two regional pre-alerts: one for haze and another for rough sea conditions, both of which apply to the entire archipelago throughout the weekend.

AEMET Weather Alerts for the Weekend:

La Palma – Heavy Rain (Yellow Alert)
From Friday 12:00PM to Saturday 11:59PM

The warning affects the eastern side of the island, where up to 60 mm of rainfall is expected over 12 hours. Showers will be particularly persistent in mid-altitude areas, where the rain will be more widespread and continuous.

Gran Canaria – Haze (Yellow Alert)
Sunday, 12:00PM to 9:00PM
The alert covers the island’s summits, north and east, and the south and west. Visibility may drop to 3,000 metres, with high dust concentrations at lower levels, especially along the southern and eastern slopes.

Lanzarote – Haze (Yellow Alert)
Sunday, 9:00AM to 6:00PM
Visibility is expected to fall to 3,000 metres, with significant amounts of airborne dust at lower altitudes.

Fuerteventura – Haze (Yellow Alert)
Sunday, 9:00AM to 6:00PM
Similar conditions to Lanzarote: visibility down to 3,000 metres and elevated dust levels close to the surface.
