Yellow Weather Warnings issued for five of the Canary Islands

The State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has issued yellow weather warnings for five Canary Islands due to strong winds and rough sea conditions expected over the next few days.

The warnings affect Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, where north-easterly winds of up to force 7 are forecast, equivalent to speeds of between 50 and 61 km/h.

The alerts mainly affect coastal and exposed areas and could be extended depending on how conditions develop. Residents and visitors are advised to take extra care around coastal areas, and observe red flags on beaches and bathing aeas.

Tenerife
A yellow warning comes into force at 4:00pm on Tuesday and is currently expected to remain active until 11:59pm on Wednesday.

The warning affects eastern, southern and western parts of the island, with the strongest winds expected in south-eastern Tenerife.

Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria will also enter yellow alert status from 4:00pm on Tuesday until late Wednesday night.

The warning covers eastern, southern and western areas of the island, particularly exposed parts of the south-east and west where stronger gusts are likely.

La Palma
La Palma’s warning begins at 4:00pm on Tuesday and is expected to remain in place until 4:00am on Wednesday before restarting again at midday until midnight.

The affected areas are mainly on the western side of the island, especially exposed south-eastern and north-western coastal zones.

La Gomera
La Gomera is under yellow warning from 4:00pm on Tuesday until midnight.

The alert covers the whole island, with the strongest winds expected in western areas.

El Hierro
El Hierro will also see a yellow weather warning activated from Tuesday afternoon until early Wednesday morning, before restarting again later in the day. The warning mainly affects western and northern parts of the island.
