Weather warnings extended to include extreme heat in two of the islands

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has extended the yellow warnings initially issued for tomorrow (Wednesday) to Thursday across six of the Canary Islands, as well as warning of extreme temperatures in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The two capital islands will be on yellow alert for maximum temperatures from 10:00am on Thursday when thermometers could reach 35°C. However, it is not ruled out that they will reach 37°C in inland areas of southern Gran Canaria. Further extensions of these warnings are not ruled in the coming hours.

Specific Warnings by Island:

Tenerife:

  • Strong Waves: Active from 3:00pm on Wednesday until 11:59pm on Thursday, with potential extension to Friday.

  • Affected Areas: East, south, and west of the island, particularly the northwest and southeast extremes, and the Anaga-Agaete channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

  • Expected Conditions: Northeastern winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7).

Gran Canaria:

  • Wind Warning: Begins at 5:00pm on Wednesday and continues until 11:59pm on Thursday, with possible extensions.

  • Affected Areas: East, south, and west of the island, particularly the southeast and northwest slopes.

  • Expected Conditions: Maximum gusts of 70 km/h.

  • Strong Waves: Active from 3:00pm on Wednesday until 11:59pm on Thursday, with potential for extension.

  • Affected Areas: East, south, and west of the island, particularly the west and southeast of Gran Canaria and the Anaga-Agaete channel.

  • Expected Conditions: Northeastern winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7).

La Palma:

  • Wind Warning: Active from 3:00pm on Wednesday until 11:59pm on Thursday.

  • Affected Areas: Peaks and western parts of the island, particularly the southeast and northwest slopes and the area of El Paso.

  • Expected Conditions: Maximum gusts of 70 km/h.

La Gomera:

  • Wind Warning: Begins at 5:00pm on Wednesday and continues until 11:59pm on Thursday, with possible extensions.

  • Affected Areas: Entire island.

  • Expected Conditions: Maximum gusts of 70 km/h.

  • Strong Waves: Active from 8:00pm on Wednesday until 11:59pm on Thursday, with potential for extension.

  • Affected Areas: Entire island.

  • Expected Conditions: Northeastern winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7).

El Hierro:

  • Wind Warning: Begins at 5:00pm on Wednesday and continues until 11:59pm on Thursday, with possible extensions.

  • Affected Areas: Entire island.

  • Expected Conditions: Maximum gusts of 70 km/h.

  • Strong Waves: Active from 8:00pm on Wednesday until 11:59pm on Thursday, with potential for extension.

  • Affected Areas: Entire island.

Lanzarote:

  • Wind Warning: Active from 5:00pm on Wednesday until 11:59pm on Thursday, with possible extensions.
