The Guardia Civil has rescued a 37-year-old man who was found adrift while attempting to cross from Tenerife to Gran Canaria using nothing more than a wooden pallet.
The alarm was raised by Maritime Rescue, who reported that the man was spotted drifting off the coast of Arona, in the south of Tenerife, near the town of Las Galletas.
The Guardia Civil’s maritime vessel Río Guadiato was immediately dispatched to begin the search, and upon arrival, officers located the man floating on the pallet at the mercy of the current.
being rescued, and brought safely on board an auxiliary boat operated by the Guardia Civil, the man revealed that he had intended to make the crossing to Gran Canaria in this highly unsafe manner.
At the time of the rescue, the man was in a stable condition but beginning to show early signs of hypothermia, so he was transported to Las Galletas harbour, where an ambulance crew was waiting to assess and treat him.
The Guardia Civil has not released further details about the circumstances leading to the dangerous attempt.
