The Canary Islands recorded the seven highest temperatures in Spain this Saturday
The Canary Islands topped Spain’s temperature charts today, Saturday, 20th September, with seven of the country’s ten highest readings, according to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
The peak was 38.6°C in La Aldea de San Nicolás (Gran Canaria) at 2:10pm. Other standout highs included:
- Puerto Gran Tarajal (Fuerteventura): 38.0°C at 12:20pm
- Lanzarote Airport: 37.7°C at 12:10pm
- Maspalomas (Gran Canaria): 37.3°C at 1:20pm
- Fuerteventura Airport: 37.1°C at 2:10pm
- El Matorral, San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria): 37.0°C at 12:00pm
- Gran Canaria Airport: 36.2°C at 11:50am
Rounding out the national top ten were Écija (Seville) at 36.3°C, Montoro (Córdoba) at 36.2°C, and Fuente Palmera (Córdoba) at 36.1°C.
Stifling nights
Overnight warmth also broke with seasonal norms. Puerto de Mogán (Gran Canaria) held 34°C at am1:00, while Güímar (Tenerife) registered 33°C, exceptional values for September “tropical nights”.
Forecast: relief on Sunday
AEMET forecasts a notable cooldown for tomorrow, Sunday with generally lower temperatures across the archipelago, highs around 29°C in Gran Canaria and minimums near 21°C in El Hierro. Skies will be mostly clear, turning cloudier in the afternoon over the higher islands.
The calima (Saharan dust) will begin to ease, more noticeably in Tenerife and the western islands, while light to moderate northerly winds veer northeasterly, with stronger intervals in exposed northwest and southeast areas.
With the change, yellow warnings for maximum temperatures and dust in suspension are expected to be lifted.
For residents and visitors, Sunday should feel more comfortable for outdoor plans, though it’s still wise to stay hydrated, use sun protection, and be mindful of dust-sensitive conditions as the calima fades.
