The first major weekend of the Santa Cruz Carnival has overwhelmed the city's hotels, leading to exorbitant prices for accommodation for two nights for two people in Tenerife.
According to online accommodation portals, staying in the centre of Santa Cruz for the carnival this weekend, from Friday (February 9th) to today (Sunday 11th), has cost people more than 2,700 euros.
Hotels, tourist apartments, and private holiday homes throughout the city have been almost fully booked with the city overflowing with visitors to the spectacular parades and street parties, that attract tens of thousands of people adorned in colourful costumes, resulting in a surge in nightly prices.
The carnival in Santa Cruz, second in size to Mardi Gras in Rio de Janeiro, is the biggest event in the Tenerife calendar putting the island on the world map for its festive celebrations.
