Holidaymakers visiting Tenerife have been urged to stay vigilant due to a recurring scam targeting tourists. A British expat, known as @seb_tenerife on TikTok, has sounded the alarm about a troubling trend where criminals approach unsuspecting visitors, asking to borrow their mobile phones. Once the device is unlocked, they make a quick escape, leaving the tourist without their phone.
This scam has been reported around Playa de las Américas, the most popular tourist area on the island, particularly along the bustling Veronica’s Strip, which is known for its nightlife.
Seb highlighted that the issue, also common in other Spanish tourist destinations like Benidorm, is compounded by pickpocketing. He urged visitors to be cautious and keep their belongings close, especially in crowded, party-heavy areas where tourists may be distracted by alcohol.
Seb’s video, which has garnered over 15,000 views, emphasises that these incidents often occur when people are intoxicated and less aware of their surroundings. His message to tourists is clear: "Just be careful, watch your belongings, and you’ll be absolutely sound."
Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands’ most visited destinations, welcomed 5.6 million tourists last year, drawn to its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife. However, like any major tourist hub, it also faces challenges with petty crime. Visitors are advised to stay alert and avoid lending their phones to strangers.
