Technical issue disrupts check-in and boarding at Gran Canaria Airport

A technical issue caused a major disruption to the check-in and boarding systems at Gran Canaria Airport yesterday afternoon (Saturday), the busiest airport in the Canary Islands.

The problem forced airport staff to carry out these processes manually, leading to significant delays in departures.

The incident caused problems for passengers, with long queues forming at check-in counters and boarding gates. AENA confirmed the issue and assured the public that normal operations would resume shortly.

Grounded flights and no space for planes

According to Air Traffic Controllers via social media, the disruption severely impacted flight departures, with only a limited number of flights able to take off.

As a result, the airport was close to capacity for parking spaces for stationary aircraft. This has led to a "rate zero" for departures, meaning no flights were allowed to head to Gran Canaria until the issue was resolved.

Efforts to Restore Normalcy

AENA stated on its social media channels that it was actively working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. However, the ongoing delays left passengers frustrated, with many expressing concerns over missed connections and disrupted travel plans.

This situation highlights the vulnerability of key infrastructure to technical failures, particularly during peak travel times, as Gran Canaria Airport serves as a vital hub for both domestic and international travel within the Canary Islands.
