The Canary Islands will face a turbulent Friday with stormy overnight showers and strong to very strong south-westerly winds throughout the middle of the day, according to Spain’s weather agency AEMET.
At sea, south-westerly winds of force 5 or 6 are expected, easing to 4 or 5 by the afternoon before strengthening again overnight to force 5 or 6, and locally 7, north of the islands.
Seas will range from moderate to rough, increasing to very rough later, with a west swell of 2 to 3 metres accompanied by showers and thunderstorms.
On land, winds will reach force 7 from the south or southwest until the afternoon in northwest Gran Canaria and eastern Tenerife. Similar conditions are forecast from the morning in northwest La Palma and northern Tenerife.
Island-by-island forecast for Friday 2nd January 2026:
TENERIFE
Cloudy in western areas with some light rain, while other zones start clearer with occasional cloud. The island will turn overcast from midday with light to moderate rain, more frequent in the west and north. Localised heavy showers are possible. Temperatures remain steady, with a chance of light frost at high altitudes. South-westerly winds will be strong with very strong gusts in the northwest, southeast, along the ridge, and in high mountain areas, where speeds may exceed 90–100 km/h. Winds will ease and shift west later in the afternoon, although strong gusts will persist at altitude.
Temperature range: Low of 15°C and high of 22°C.
GRAN CANARIA
Cloudy on western and south-western slopes with occasional light rain. Cloud cover will increase across the island from midday, bringing light to moderate rain, most likely in the southwest but possible elsewhere. Some clearer spells may appear later. Winds from the southwest will be strong on the northwest and eastern slopes, in high areas, and on the northern side, with a risk of very strong gusts. Winds will ease and turn westerly by late afternoon.
Temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 22°C.
LANZAROTE
Heavy showers, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms, are likely during the early hours. Conditions will ease to partly cloudy in the morning before becoming overcast again later with light to moderate rain. Strong south-westerly winds are expected inland, with the possibility of very strong gusts around midday. Winds will shift to the west and ease by evening.
Temperature range: Low of 15°C and high of 21°C.
FUERTEVENTURA
Similar to Lanzarote, the island will see early heavy showers with a chance of thunderstorms, clearing somewhat during the morning before clouding over again late afternoon with further light to moderate rain. Strong south-westerly winds will affect inland areas and Jandía, where very strong gusts cannot be ruled out. Winds will turn westerly and ease by night.
Temperature range: Low of 15°C and high of 21°C.
