The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a yellow weather alert for thunderstorms across the entire Canary Islands this afternoon (Tuesday), with rain and storms expected to affect the islands, particularly in areas with high cloud bases.
These may be accompanied by very strong convective wind gusts of variable direction, causing big waves and dangerous sea conditions, adding to the potential hazards.
As a result, the Canary Islands government has placed the whole archipelago on pre-alert status under the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PFMA), in accordance with Decree 18/2014 of March 20.
AEMET say that this afternoon and evening we can expect clouds, wind, and some rain, with possible thunder and lightening overnight and tomorrow with potentially strong downpours.
- Close doors and windows to prevent air currents, which can attract lightning.
- Unplug electrical devices to avoid damage from power surges or electrical discharges.
- Disconnect the television antenna to avoid lightning strikes.
- Stay away from metal structures like towers or fences.
- Avoid sheltering under trees, as wet wood can conduct electricity.
- Avoid travel wherever possible; if you must drive, exercise extreme caution.
- In case of emergency, call 112.
