The Canary Islands recorded almost two million overnight stays in tourist holiday apartments during April, despite a year-on-year drop of nearly 12%, according to new figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
The archipelago remained the most popular destination in Spain for apartment-style holiday accommodation, even after overnight stays fell by 11.9% compared with April 2025.
In total, tourist apartments across the islands registered around 1.9 million overnight stays during the month.
Gran Canaria and Tenerife Lead the Rankings
Gran Canaria was the most popular tourist area in Spain for apartment stays, recording more than 646,000 overnight stays.
The municipalities with the highest number of overnight stays were:
- San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria)
- Mogán (Gran Canaria)
- Arona (Tenerife)
Meanwhile, Madrid recorded the highest apartment occupancy rate in the country, with 74.1% of available apartments occupied.
Easter Timing Affects the Figures
Across Spain as a whole, overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation, including apartments, campsites, rural houses and hostels, fell by 1.1% in April.
However, the INE noted that Easter fell across both March and April this year, while in 2025 it took place entirely in April, making direct comparisons more difficult.
When March and April are combined, overnight stays in non-hotel accommodation across Spain actually rose by 1.7% compared with the same period last year.
The increase was mainly driven by Spanish travellers, while foreign visitor numbers saw a slight decline.
Prices Continue to Rise
Despite the drop in overnight stays, prices for tourist apartments continued to increase.
The Tourist Apartment Price Index rose by 6.3% in April compared with the same month last year, marking the sharpest increase of the past 12 months.
The average stay in this type of accommodation during April was 3.5 nights per visitor.
