The Canary Islands will see a fall in temperatures and increasing cloud cover today, Thursday, with light rainfall expected across much of the archipelago. According to Spain’s national met office, Aemet, snow is expected at the highest peaks of Tenerife and La Palma.
Maximum temperatures will reach 24°C in Tenerife and the western islands, and 23°C in Gran Canaria and the eastern islands. Winds from the northeast or east will start off light in the early morning before strengthening to moderate around midday.
Mariners can also expect fresh northeasterly winds in Canary waters, with force 2–3 or 3–4 depending on the area, along with slight to moderate seas and a north to northwest swell of 1–2 metres.
Island-by-Island Forecast for Thursday 20th November:
TENERIFE
Tenerife will be largely covered by high cloud for most of the day, with an increase in lower and mid-level cloud from midday onwards. Northern slopes, the southwest coast, and later the eastern side of the island will see thicker cloud, along with a higher chance of light or locally moderate rainfall. At higher elevations, above 2,300–2,400 metres, precipitation may fall as snow, bringing the possibility of fresh snow cover on Mount Teide. Temperatures remain unchanged overall, though high-altitude and northern areas may notice a slight drop in the maximums. Northeasterly winds will strengthen during the afternoon, while easterly winds will establish across the summit areas. Coastal breezes are expected along the west coast.
Expected temperature range: Low of 19°C and high of 24°C.
GRAN CANARIA
Gran Canaria is set for a generally cloudy day, dominated by high cloud early on. After dawn, low cloud will increase gradually, especially in northern and interior regions. By midday, cloud will be more compact, bringing a higher likelihood of light rainfall in these areas. Coastal areas in the south may see brighter intervals but still under a veil of high cloud. Maximum temperatures won’t vary much from previous days, although minimums will dip slightly overnight. Winds from the northeast will start light but are expected to become moderate later. Western coastal areas will experience the usual afternoon sea breezes.
Expected temperature range: Low of 19°C and high of 23°C.
LANZAROTE
Lanzarote will wake up to intervals of cloud, with much of the sky covered by high cloud throughout the day. Although the chance of rain is low, Aemet does not rule out the possibility of light scattered showers at any point. Temperatures will remain stable, offering mild conditions despite the cloudiness. Winds from the northeast will be light during the early morning but will increase to moderate strength as the day progresses, making coastal areas feel a little fresher.
Expected temperature range: Low of 16°C and high of 25°C.
FUERTEVENTURA
Much like Lanzarote, Fuerteventura will experience a mix of cloud and high-level haze, giving the island a generally overcast appearance. There is a small chance of light showers, though most areas will remain dry. Temperatures will change very little and should feel comfortable throughout the day. Northeasterly winds will start off light, picking up to moderate levels after midday, especially along exposed coastlines and open terrain.
Expected temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 24°C.
