The Canary Islands will enjoy mostly clear skies today, Saturday, with only some patches of high and low cloud over the northern slopes of the more mountainous islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
A light calima (haze) at higher altitudes and hot daytime temperatures above 30°C are also forecast, according to forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Winds will generally blow from the north-east, light to moderate in strength, with breezes along the south-west coasts of the mountainous islands. On higher ground, winds will shift from the southwest to the west and be moderate at altitude, while remaining light in most other areas.
At sea, winds will come from the north or north-east at force 3 or 4, occasionally reaching force 5 around parts of the archipelago’s coasts. Conditions will bring slight to moderate seas west and east of the larger islands and around Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, while the rest of the region will see calm to slight seas. A northern swell of 1 to 2 metres is also expected.
TENERIFE
Mostly clear with some mid- and high-level cloud. Cloud build-up could bring isolated, brief afternoon showers. Light haze at altitude, more significant on the southern slopes. Temperatures steady, reaching or exceeding 30°C in southern and western mid-altitude areas. Trade winds may be strong at times in the southeast and extreme northwest in the afternoon, with breezes along the southwest coast.
LANZAROTE
Mostly clear skies with some cloud in the northwest at the start and end of the day. Light haze at high altitude. Temperatures remain steady, though a slight drop is expected in the south. Highs may reach 30°C locally in the southeast. Moderate north-easterly winds.
FUERTEVENTURA
Mostly clear with light high-altitude haze. Temperatures largely unchanged, with highs locally above 30°C in the southeast. Moderate north-easterly winds.
GRAN CANARIA
Generally clear with mid and high-level cloud, and some low cloud in the north at the start and end of the day. There is a slight chance of isolated showers this afternoon due to cloud build-up. Light haze, more noticeable on the southern slopes. Temperatures steady, but highs of 32–34°C are possible in southern and western mid-altitude areas. Trade winds may become strong in the southeast and northwest in the afternoon, with breezes in the southwest. On the summits, light north-westerly winds will turn northerly and increase slightly later in the day.
