The Tenerife Cabildo has finished an important restoration project at the protected coastal area of La Caleta in Costa Adeje known for its wildlife, volcanic landscapes, and natural beauty. La Caleta is officially classified as a Site of Scientific Interest due to its rare plants, unique rock formations, and valuable habitats.

The project, funded with €487,000 from the EU Next Generation programme, aims to repair years of environmental damage caused by old agricultural activity, squatters living in beach caves, and heavy tourist numbers.

Work included restoring official walking paths, removing unofficial trails, clearing invasive plant species, planting thousands of native and endemic plants, removing piles of stones, and building small stone steps to improve access in a controlled way. In total, more than 7,000 m² of unofficial paths were removed so visitors can be guided along safe, sustainable routes.

Blanca Pérez, councillor for the Natural Environment, explained that although La Caleta has been a protected area since 1987, it has suffered from large numbers of visitors and unauthorised use over the years. “Our goal has been to recover the natural value of La Caleta, protect its native species, and ensure that this unique landscape can be preserved for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

The protected area covers more than 78 hectares and is home to important wildlife and geological formations. In the past, parts of the site were affected by illegal settlements in caves and hollows, leaving a negative impact on the environment.

The Cabildo says the improvements are designed to protect La Caleta while still allowing people to enjoy it responsibly, ensuring this beautiful part of Tenerife remains healthy and accessible for residents and tourists in the years ahead.
