Rain will clear the haze in the Canaries and make the islands ‘fresher’
The Canary Islands are set to welcome the first rains of December this week, bringing relief after a prolonged spell of calima that has left skies hazy across the archipelago.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the dusty conditions are expected to fade as a new weather system arrives, replacing suspended sand with cloud and scattered showers.
A trough of cold air descending from the north will influence the region over the next few days, making conditions slightly wetter and more unsettled. Strengthened trade winds are expected along the southeast and northwest slopes of the islands, while lighter coastal breezes will prevail on the southwest coasts of the more mountainous islands.
Today, Tuesday, will bring intervals of cloud across the islands, with more persistent cloud cover in the north of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and other mountainous islands. Light and occasional showers may occur, particularly during the morning in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Temperatures will remain stable overall, although daytime highs could fall slightly in mid-altitude southern areas of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Strong gusts of trade wind are likely in exposed locations.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, is expected to see more widespread rainfall, especially in the early hours, affecting La Palma, El Hierro, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria before gradually easing throughout the afternoon. Light showers may also reach Fuerteventura during the morning. Cloud will be more frequent in northern areas, while the south may experience brighter spells later in the day.
While the rainfall is not forecast to be particularly heavy, this shift to a cooler, fresher and more humid pattern will significantly improve visibility and air quality following the recent calima, a welcome change for residents and visitors as the islands enter the final month of the year.
