Storm Emilia will continue to affect the Canary Islands today, Sunday, bringing unsettled weather conditions including heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and very rough seas, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). A special weather warning remains in force across the archipelago.
AEMET forecasts mostly cloudy skies, particularly on the northern slopes of the more mountainous islands. Occasional rain is expected, especially in Tenerife and the western islands.
Locally heavy downpours cannot be ruled out, especially during the early hours of the morning, when storms may also be accompanied by lightning. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are also expected in coastal waters.
The ongoing impact of Storm Emilia means the Canary Islands remain under a special advisory for adverse weather conditions, including rain, wind and coastal hazards.
Temperatures and frost at high altitude
Temperatures are expected to remain largely stable. However, minimum temperatures may rise slightly in mid-altitude areas and on north-facing summits, while maximum temperatures could see a slight increase on the southern slopes of the mountainous islands.
Despite this, AEMET warns of light frost on the highest peaks of the central islands and La Palma, above 1,900 metres. Residents and hikers in these areas should take extra precautions.
Strong winds and dangerous sea conditions
Winds will predominantly come from the north, with occasional very strong gusts expected on eastern and north-western slopes of the mountainous islands, as well as on exposed high ground during the early morning. These winds are forecast to ease as the day progresses.
At sea, conditions will be particularly hazardous. Northerly or north-westerly winds of force 6 to 7 are expected, occasionally reaching force 8, before easing overnight to force 4 or 5. Seas will be rough to very rough, gradually decreasing to strong swell during the early hours. A northerly or north-westerly swell of 5 to 6 metres is forecast, dropping to 4 to 5 metres later. Coastal areas may also experience heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms.
