The public transport network in Arrecife is set to be revamped later this year with the addition of eight new large buses, in a bid to boost service across the capital of Lanzarote.
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, confirmed the upgrade during a briefing on Tuesday, revealing that four of the buses are already in production.
The remaining four will go out to tender this summer, with the total investment close to €4 million. He said that "Residents will notice faster, more frequent services and a more reliable network."
The new vehicles, some of which will be fully electric, are part of a wider strategy to modernise the city’s transport fleet. It follows the addition of two new buses in December, as the cabildo continues to push for cleaner, more efficient travel.
Transport Councillor, Mario González Altube, who is overseeing the project, said the expanded fleet will “significantly cut wait times and improve connections between neighbourhoods and the city centre”.
With a population of over 71,000 and growing numbers of visitors each year, the city is aiming to end 2025 with more than 600,000 passengers using its public bus service.
