Political party, Podemos, has publicly denounced construction works at the Cuna del Alma development in El Puertito de Adeje, south Tenerife, claiming that several plots are encroaching on protected coastal land without the legally required authorisation from the Provincial Coastal Authority.
According to the party, the activity is occurring in highly sensitive sectors, including plot CO-1 (designated for commercial and leisure use) and RD-1 and RD-2 (recreational and sports use), where construction has been detected despite restrictions under current coastal protection laws.
Podemos states that the project’s own licence application files include a technical report warning that these plots fall within the protected easement zone, meaning that express authorisation from Costas is mandatory. However, the party says that no such approval appears in the documentation, raising “serious suspicions of administrative irregularities”.
As a result, Podemos is calling for the immediate suspension of all works in the affected areas, and for the Adeje Town Hall, the Canary Islands Government, and the Directorate-General for Coasts (Costas) to intervene urgently in what could amount to a “serious violation of Spain’s maritime-terrestrial public domain”.
“We are facing a blatant breach of environmental and planning law. It is unacceptable that, after everything that has happened, construction continues in protected areas without even respecting the most basic procedures,” said Gabriel González, Podemos councillor in Adeje.
The party stresses that national legislation — Spain’s Coastal Law 22/1988 and its regulations — explicitly prohibits construction within protected easement zones without the corresponding authorisation. “Local paperwork cannot be used as an excuse to look the other way,” González insisted.
Podemos added that this latest complaint adds to long-standing criticism from environmental and community groups, who for months have warned about impacts on the landscape, biodiversity, and public access to the shoreline.
The Cuna del Alma project has previously faced sanctions for damage to heritage sites and several work stoppages for breaching state environmental regulations.
