The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) are forecasting cloudy skies with the possibility of light rain in the north of the more mountainous Canary Islands today Friday (12th September). Elsewhere, skies will remain mostly clear. Temperatures are expected to stay stable or rise slightly inland, with moderate north-easterly winds.
Strong gusts are likely along the north-western and south-eastern slopes of the mountainous islands.
At sea, winds from the north and northeast will reach force 4 or 5, increasing to force 6 at times, bringing moderate to rough seas. In other areas, winds will be variable at force 1 to 3 with slight to smooth seas. Swell from the north will produce waves of 1 to 2 metres, temporarily rising to 3 metres.
Here is today’s forecast for each of the islands:
LANZAROTE
In Lanzarote, cloudy skies will dominate the north and west of the island, although these will begin to clear during the afternoon. The rest of the island will enjoy mostly sunny conditions, with some cloud at the beginning and end of the day. Temperatures will remain unchanged, while moderate north-easterly winds could become stronger in inland areas. In Arrecife, temperatures are expected to range between 22°C and 29°C.
FUERTEVENTURA
Fuerteventura will start and end the day with cloudy intervals, but skies will become mostly clear and sunny through the central hours. Temperatures will remain stable across the island. Winds from the northeast will be moderate, although they could reach stronger levels in the south of Jandía. In Puerto del Rosario, temperatures are forecast between 22°C and 27°C.
GRAN CANARIA
In Gran Canaria, the northern areas below 1,000 to 1,100 metres are likely to see mostly cloudy skies with a chance of weak and occasional showers in the mid-altitude zones during the morning, before clearing later in the day. The rest of the island will enjoy mostly sunny conditions.
Temperatures will show little change, although maximums may rise slightly in the southern midlands, where 30 to 32°C could be reached in some spots. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with strong intervals and the possibility of very strong gusts along the south-eastern and western slopes during the middle of the day. Breezes are expected along the south-western coast. Temperatures will generally range between 22°C and 27°C.
TENERIFE
In Tenerife, cloudy skies are expected in the north below 1,200 to 1,300 metres, with a chance of weak and occasional rain in mid-altitude areas during the morning, giving way to clearer conditions in the afternoon. The south and west will remain mostly sunny with only occasional clouds, while the central peaks will enjoy clear skies.
Temperatures are expected to remain steady, although there may be slight increases in the higher areas. Winds will blow moderately from the northeast, with stronger intervals on the south-eastern and extreme north-western slopes. Breezes are forecast in the west, and at the highest altitudes winds will be light, mainly from the east. Temperatures are forecast between 23°C and 28°C.
