More intense rain forecast in the north of the islands this Wednesday

The Canary Islands are set to experience more intense rain today, Wednesday, especially in the more mountainous islands (Tenerife and La Palma) and Lanzarote, according to the latest forecast from Spain's Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

There will be light to moderate rain this morning, in the northern parts of Tenerife, La Palma and Lanzarote, and later in the afternoon inland in mountainous areas, where showers could develop into heavier downpours of up to 15mm per hour of rainfall.

There is also a chance of thunderstorms in the northern areas of these islands.

Lanzarote, currently under pre-alert for heavy rainfall and flood risk, is expected to be cloudy in the morning, with the possibility of strong rain diminishing by the evening. Temperatures are forecast to show a slight to moderate rise in the morning lows, while afternoon highs will see a slight to moderate drop, particularly in the interior regions of the mountainous islands.

Winds will be light to moderate from the west, shifting to the northeast as the day progresses, and intensifying this afternoon. Over the seas, winds from the west or southwest will gradually weaken throughout the day. Expect choppy waters that will calm to a slight swell by the afternoon, with waves reaching up to two metres from the northwest.

Island-by-Island Forecast:

Lanzarote:

Cloudy skies with possible light to moderate rain in the morning, and a small chance of thunderstorms in the northern parts. Rain is expected to ease by late afternoon. Winds will shift from the southwest to the northeast as the day progresses.
Forecast temperatures: Maximum of 26°C and minimum of 22°C.

Fuerteventura:

Partly cloudy skies with potential light to moderate rain, especially in the north during the early morning. Temperatures will rise slightly during the day. Winds will shift from the southwest to the northeast by the afternoon.
Forecast temperatures: Maximum of 26°C and minimum of 22°C.

Gran Canaria:

Cloudy in the interior with likely light rain, particularly in the central and higher regions by afternoon. Temperatures will rise slightly in the morning, with little change in the afternoon. Winds will turn from west to northeast, with stronger gusts expected in the northwest and southeast.
Forecast temperatures: Maximum of 26°C and minimum of 22°C.

Tenerife:

Cloudy skies with rain are expected in the northern and eastern areas, potentially becoming heavy and persistent. Afternoon showers may also occur in the eastern interior regions. Temperatures will rise slightly in the morning and drop in the afternoon. Winds will intensify from the northeast later in the day, particularly in the northwest and southeast.
Forecast temperatures: Maximum of 27°C and minimum of 22°C.

This weather pattern signals a shift in the region's climate as autumn sets in, bringing cooler days and wetter conditions, especially in the island's northern and central areas.
