Over the next 10 days keep an eye on the skies as you see and hear F-18 fighter jets over head from the 462 Squadron of Wing 46 at Gando Air Base. This week is the beginning of commemorative events for Armed Forces Day in both Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with the participation of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Guardia Civil, and Emergency Military Unit (UME).
As part of this, F-18s will perform a flyover during the lowering of the flag in tribute to the fallen, in Tenerife on May 18th and in Gran Canaria on May 24th, in strict coordination with civil aviation authorities, adhering rigorously to safety regulations.
To prepare for it, the aircraft will conduct a rehearsal on the mornings of May 17th in Santa Cruz over Avda. Marítima, and on May 24th in Las Palmas over Las Canteras beach.
Additionally, tomorrow morning (Wednesday May 15th) there will be a display in Las Palmas featuring a helicopter from the 802 Squadron Armed Forces (SAR) and a Navy vessel, making final preparations for air displays to be held on May 26th.
The program of activities celebrating Armed Forces Day will commence with a concert open to the public on May 16th (Thursday) at San Telmo Park in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, featuring music from the Canary Islands Air Command, War Band No.1 of the "Canarias" XVI Brigade, with singer Nereida Peña, a military member of the Canary Islands Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC Canarias) of the Air Force.
