Las Palomas viewpoint in Costa Adeje nominated for National Architecture Award

The newly renovated Las Palomas viewpoint, perched along the La Enramada coastline in Costa Adeje in the south of Tenerife, has been nominated in the Landscape category of the prestigious Architecture Awards granted by the Spanish Council of Architects' Associations (CSCAE).

The nomination recognises projects that significantly contribute to social, cultural, and environmental values within the realms of architecture and urban planning.

The project, commissioned by Adeje Town Hall and designed by Jiménez Bazán Arquitectos, focuses on the recovery and transformation of a high-value natural site in the San Sebastián area of La Caleta. Now a fully accessible public space, the viewpoint was conceived to harmonise with its surroundings while offering residents and visitors an enhanced experience of the coastal landscape.

“We are extremely proud to receive this nomination,” said José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Mayor of Adeje. “Our goal was to enhance the beauty of the site, restore its significance, and ensure that it is open and accessible to all. We’ve created a space that is both inclusive and respectful of the environment.”

A Model of Inclusive and Sustainable Design

The redevelopment replaced a steep stairway with a gently sloped ramp (with a 6% incline), enabling full accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The path includes two rest stops, the first providing shade and views of La Enramada beach, and the second culminating in an elevated platform that appears to merge with the ocean horizon, offering a striking visual experience.

The design prioritised natural integration, preserving the topography and using materials that echo the local environment. Continuous exposed aggregate concrete in earthy tones was chosen for paving, while the railings and shading elements were constructed in exposed concrete, ensuring both durability and aesthetic cohesion. Low-profile floor-level lighting minimises visual disruption, allowing uninterrupted enjoyment of the Atlantic vistas.

An Award-Winning Architectural Legacy

The Las Palomas viewpoint is the latest in a series of acclaimed public works in Adeje. The municipality has previously received international recognition, notably the World Architecture Festival (WAF) award for the Plaza de España in the ‘New and Old’ category, and the Manuel de Oráa Architecture Award.

This new nomination highlights Adeje’s commitment to sustainable, inclusive and culturally enriching public spaces, reinforcing the municipality’s reputation as a benchmark for forward-thinking coastal development.
