IKEA opens its first hotel in Spain just minutes from the beach in Gran Canaria

IKEA has officially entered the Spanish hospitality sector with the opening of its very first hotel in the country, and it’s just five minutes from the beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Las Dunas de Santa Catalina Boutique House is a two-star boutique hotel situated near Playa de Las Alcaravaneras.

This move marks the homeware giant’s debut as a hotel operator in Spain, delivered through its local subsidiary, Sarton Canarias. A second hotel is already in the pipeline: Las Vegas de Ciudad Jardín Suites, which will combine two adjacent villas on Calle Brasil and Calle Fortuny, offering a total of 21 rooms.

A New Chapter, But Not Ikea as You Know It

While the brand may be known for its iconic blue and yellow colour scheme and minimalist Scandinavian interiors, this new venture takes a different approach. Unlike the original Ikea Hotell in Älmhult, Sweden, opened in 1964 and showcasing the brand’s trademark style, the Gran Canaria property steps away from the classic Ikea look.

The company’s decision to open its first Spanish hotel in the Canary Islands reflects growing confidence in the country’s hospitality sector, which attracted more than €3 billion in investment in 2024.

With one hotel now open and another on the way, Ikea appears poised to carve out a place in Spain’s increasingly competitive boutique hotel market, far from flat-packs and showrooms, but still very much in line with the brand’s focus on accessible design and everyday comfort.
