The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, is the highest-paid mayor in the Canary Islands, earning €91,172 a year, according to newly published figures from Spain’s Ministry of Public Administration for 2024.

His salary is also among the highest in the country, ranking 12th nationwide. Only the mayors of major cities such as Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona earn more.

In the Canary Islands, he is followed by the mayors of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez (€75,564); Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias (€72,828); Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez (€71,201); Arona, Fátima Lemes (€70,000); and Tías, José Juan Cruz (€66,081).

Other mayors earning over €60,000 include those of Teguise (€65,810), Mogán (€63,888), Candelaria (€63,000), and Guía de Isora (€61,933).

At the opposite end of the scale, several mayors received no salary at all for their work in 2024, including those in Alajeró, Arafo, Barlovento, Fuencaliente, Los Llanos, Santiago del Teide and Mazo.

Some received only symbolic payments: the mayor of El Pinar in El Hierro earned just €762, while the mayors of Hermigua and Breña Baja were paid under €5,000 throughout the year.

The lowest-paid full-time mayor in the Canary Islands was Alejandro Herrera of La Guancha, receiving €13,050 annually.

Across Spain, data was available for 6,858 of the country’s 8,131 mayors. More than 1,200 local councils did not report salary details including large municipalities such as Parla, Ourense and Telde.

The disparity highlights the significant differences in pay depending on council size, budget, and whether the role is full-time or part-time. Despite the responsibilities involved, hundreds of mayors across Spain receive only symbolic or minimal compensation for their work.
