Maritime authorities have recovered a number of suspected packages of drugs drifting off the coast of La Gomera. Members of the Guardia Civil stationed on the island pulled at least 13 large bundles from the sea, which were spotted floating northwest of the island.
The packages, weighing around 25 kilograms each, are believed to contain illegal drugs, most likely hashish, though the presence of cocaine has not been ruled out.
The operation, which involved several boats, saw officers bring the haul ashore at the port of Valle Gran Rey. Footage and images of the discovery circulated on social media before officials confirmed the recovery.
The Guardia Civil has not yet disclosed the total weight or contents of the packages, but investigations are underway to determine their origin and intended destination.
Drug traffickers are known to use the waters surrounding the Canary Islands as a transit route between Africa and Europe. Incidents involving floating bales of narcotics being discovered at sea have become increasingly common in recent years.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether any arrests have been made in connection with the find.
