Government issues weather warnings for wind in five Canary Islands

The Canary Islands Government, through its Directorate General for Emergencies, has declared a state of pre-alert for strong winds across five islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, El Hierro, and La Gomera.

The measure will come into effect from midnight tonight, 00:00h on Saturday, 10th May.

The decision is based on information provided by the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other relevant sources, as outlined in the Canary Islands’ Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

According to forecasts, the region will be affected by moderate to strong south-westerly winds, with potentially very strong gusts. Sustained wind speeds are expected to range between 30 and 50 km/h, while maximum gusts could reach up to 80 km/h in certain areas.

The most intense winds are likely to affect higher altitudes, midlands, and summits—particularly in the eastern parts of La Palma, the Teide National Park, the northwest and southeast of Tenerife, as well as the northwest and summit areas of Gran Canaria.

In response to the conditions, Aemet has issued yellow warnings for wind in Tenerife (north, east, south, and west), La Palma (summits and east), and Gran Canaria (north and summits).

This pre-alert forms part of a broader preventative effort as weather conditions continue to deteriorate across the archipelago, with additional alerts in place for high temperatures, including a red warning in Gran Canaria and an orange warning in Tenerife.
