Government Issues Official Weather Alert for Heavy Rain and Flooding Across the Canary Islands
The Government of the Canary Islands has officially declared a state of alert for rain, flooding, and strong winds across the entire archipelago, effective from 3:00pm tomorrow (Wednesday 12th November 2025), according to the Regional Directorate of Emergencies and based on forecasts from the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
The alert is issued under the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA) and comes as a cold front linked to storm system “Claudia”, currently positioned southwest of the British Isles, moves across the islands from west to east.
The front will first reach La Palma before midday on Wednesday, progressing through the archipelago and leaving Lanzarote and Fuerteventura by Thursday evening. It is expected to bring persistent and occasionally torrential rainfall, particularly on the western and southern slopes of the mountainous islands.
Forecasts indicate rainfall accumulations of 20–30mm in one hour and up to 80–100mm in 12 hours in Tenerife and the western islands. In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, totals could exceed 15mm per hour in some areas.

- La Palma: 3:00pm (Wednesday)
- El Hierro, La Gomera, Tenerife: 6:00pm (Wednesday)
- Gran Canaria: 12:00am midnight (Thursday)
- Fuerteventura, Lanzarote: 6:00am (Thursday)
AEMET has also activated weather warnings, noting that the southwest-facing slopes are likely to experience the most intense downpours, with a risk of flash flooding in ravines and low-lying areas.
Strong southwesterly winds could bring very intense gusts, potentially causing falling branches, trees, or structural debris, while rough seas may impact ports and seafront promenades.
Residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid coastal areas, and stay updated via official channels.
