Extra ferry added between mainland Spain and the Canary Islands for the summer

Ferry operators Baleària and Fred Olsen Express are adding a fourth weekly service between the port of Huelva in the south of Spain and Tenerife this summer, in response to growing demand from both passengers and freight companies.

The additional crossing will run from 15th July to 18th September, increasing the current schedule from three sailings per week to four.

The route, which connects Huelva, located in Andalusia near the Portuguese border, with Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has become a vital link between the Canary Islands and the mainland.

The service is operated by the ferries Sicilia and Marie Curie. The Sicilia can carry up to 1,000 passengers and 400 vehicles, while the Marie Curie holds more than 800 passengers and 600 vehicles.

Departures from Huelva will now take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. All sailings serve both Gran Canaria and Tenerife, except the Wednesday service, which travels to Tenerife only. From the Canary Islands, ferries will depart on Sundays and Mondays, with two additional sailings leaving Tenerife on Thursdays.

Fred Olsen Express fleet director Juan Ignacio Liaño said the extra trip had helped meet summer demand in 2024 and was being brought back to support passengers again this year.

A direct ferry crossing between Tenerife and Huelva typically takes up to 39 hours, depending on the vessel and sea conditions. The fastest sailings, usually operated by Fred Olsen Express, complete the route in around 33 and a half hours.

Onboard services include cabins, restaurants, and pet-friendly facilities, aiming to offer a more comfortable long-distance sea journey for both residents and tourists.
