A 50-year-old man has been arrested in Arrecife after allegedly attempting to run from Local Police officers and resisting arrest during a routine stop. The driver later tested positive for drugs, and officers reportedly found several bags containing suspected narcotics in his possession.
The incident took place yesterday morning (Thursday) when officers from Arrecife’s Citizen Assistance Operational Group noticed a vehicle that raised their suspicions after they detected a strong smell believed to be linked to drugs coming from inside the car.
According to Local Police, officers signalled for the driver to stop, but he initially ignored the request and continued driving for several metres before eventually pulling over.
After stopping the vehicle, officers asked the man for his identification. At that point, he allegedly got out of the car and attempted to escape on foot.
Police immediately gave chase and caught up with him around 50 metres away. Officers said the man actively resisted arrest and refused to cooperate, making it difficult to carry out the intervention before he was eventually restrained.
A subsequent search uncovered several bags containing suspected drugs, which were seized by police. An official report was also issued for possession of narcotics.
The driver was additionally reported for testing positive during a roadside drug test.
He was taken to police custody while the relevant proceedings were completed before being brought before the courts.
